When you have had your carpets installed for a few years then you will notice they start to look old and the colors dull down, that is usually because they are getting grubby after people walk on them in dirty shoes and your dog sheds on them, or you spill food on them etc. If you think about all the ingrained dirt in them after a few years then they do start to get a bit unhygienic, to clean them you either have to shampoo your carpets, or you can buy all new carpets, but that is going to get really expensive.
If you want to shampoo them then you can actually do it yourself, but most people get an outside firm in to do it for them. If you get a professional firm to do it then they will take the time to move all your furniture for you, and dry out your carpets properly, but you are going to pay a lot for the work to be done. Or you can buy something like a Hoover F5914-900 which can do the shampooing and some of the drying for you and only costs around $130 at the moment from Amazon.com, then you can use it as much as you want once you own it.
Whichever way you decide to clean them then make sure they are really dry before you start putting everything back, otherwise they could get moldy which would ruin them. So you need to extract all the water and shampoo that was used to wash them, a machine like the F5914-900 has that function built in, and then open all the windows (while you are still in the house) and leave some fans on in the room to get rid of the moisture, then put the furniture back once it is dry. This may sound like a lot of work if you do it yourself, but the end result will be well worth it.
